About Balladeer Extraordinaire Tony Compton
Native Washingtonian Anthony Compton discovered music through his parents’ voices—his mother, Connie, singing gospel spirituals and his father, Robert, with a resonant baritone. Influenced by jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Sarah Vaughan, Anthony developed his talent through school choirs, including the Barbershop Quartet and Madrigal Singers at Northwestern High School.
Anthony’s jazz journey began in 2002, studying under Ronnie Wells and Ron Elliston at the Elliston Music Studio. That year, he made his debut at Twins Lounge and became a semi-finalist in the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship (FMJS) Emerging Jazz Artists Competition at the East Coast Jazz Festival, earning third place in 2004. He performed with the Elliston Music Studio Gospel Choir, Project Natale, and at Westminster Church Jazz Night, gaining recognition in the jazz community.
A devoted artist, Anthony has graced stages such as Blues Alley, The Islander, and the George Washington University Inaugural Ball with King James and the Serfs of Swing. His performances with Keeter Betts and other accomplished musicians reflect his passion and dedication. Known for his heartfelt delivery and unique style, Anthony continues to enchant audiences as a balladeer with a voice that celebrates his musical journey.
