About John Lamkin Jr.
Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Dr. John R. Lamkin II developed his devotion to jazz after exposure to live performances by such greats as Cannonball Adderley, Stanley Turrentine, and Duke Ellington in the vibrant club scene of his hometown. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State University, a Master’s from Morgan State University and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Maryland College Park — all in music education — establishing a foundation that would shape both his performance and teaching career.
Lamkin’s distinguished career includes leadership roles in music education — serving for many years as Director of Bands and Coordinator of Music Education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he developed highly regarded ensembles including the UMES Jazz Ensemble. During this tenure he brought renowned jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Jon Faddis, Nicholas Payton, and Jimmy Heath to perform and educate with his students.
In addition to his work as an educator, Lamkin has performed with a remarkable range of artists and ensembles, including The Manhattans, Stephanie Mills, Sonny Stitt, Cyrus Chestnut, Keter Betts, the African American Jazz Caucus Big Band, and numerous regional big bands and jazz ensembles. He also leads his own groups — including his beloved “Favorites” Jazz Quintet — specializing in straight‑ahead jazz and originals inspired by the quintet tradition of Art Blakey, Horace Silver, and Miles Davis.
Lamkin has been honored with the 2014 Jazz Heroes Award from the Jazz Journalists Association for his profound impact on the Baltimore jazz community and has received accolades such as the “Giants Among Us Award” from the Maryland arts community.
The John Lamkin Jr. Group continues this legacy of excellence, bringing together seasoned artists and fresh, spirited performances rooted in the heart of jazz tradition. Don’t miss this compelling performance on the Bijou Stage — a celebration of history, swing, and heartfelt musical expression.
