About the Howard University Jazz Ensemble
Founded in 1975 by its director, Fred Irby, III, the Howard University Jazz Ensemble has long been a cornerstone of Howard University’s Department of Music and a vital force in the Washington, D.C. jazz community. The ensemble is dedicated to preserving the legacy of jazz while fostering innovation, discipline, and artistic excellence among its student musicians. Through rigorous training and performance opportunities, HUJE prepares emerging artists for professional careers in jazz and related musical fields.
The ensemble’s repertoire spans the full spectrum of jazz, including swing, bebop, hard bop, Latin jazz, blues, and contemporary compositions, often highlighting works by legendary composers alongside original student and faculty arrangements. HUJE has performed at major festivals, concert halls, community events, and educational institutions, earning recognition for its tight ensemble work, dynamic soloists, and stylistic versatility.
HUJE also serves as a cultural ambassador for Howard University, continuing the institution’s historic role in shaping Black musical excellence and leadership in the arts. Many of its alumni have gone on to successful careers as performers, educators, composers, and industry professionals, contributing to jazz on national and international stages.
This Main Stage performance promises a compelling blend of tradition, youthful energy, and sophisticated musicianship — a testament to Howard University’s enduring impact on the jazz world.
