About David Cole

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., David Cole developed a deep passion for music at a young age, inspired by the soulful guitar artistry of legends like Curtis Mayfield, Cornell Dupree, and Clarence Carter, as well as the dynamic performances of James Brown, whom he experienced both on the radio and live at the iconic Howard Theatre. While singing in his school’s Glee Club, David borrowed a neighbor’s guitar, immersing himself in the R&B and soul hits of the time. Recognizing his burgeoning talent, David’s father gifted him his first guitar, paving the way for him to form his first band.

David’s journey as a musician expanded as he performed at local venues, gaining invaluable experience and exposure. Influenced by D.C. guitarist Michael Edwards and other iconic musicians such as Omar Mesa of Mandrill, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and blues legend Howlin’ Wolf (introduced to him by his older brother), David began to explore the instrument’s versatility beyond R&B and soul.

David’s talent caught the attention of R&B performer Little Royal, who recruited him as a guitarist for his touring band. The group traveled extensively across North America, performing from Canada to Florida. Despite the excitement of life on the road, David returned to Washington, D.C., to focus on his future, enrolling at the University of the District of Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education (BMED) degree. During this period, he developed a close friendship with local jazz guitarist Jerry Gordon, which fueled his passion for jazz and blues styles inspired by Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, and Albert King.

As David refined his artistry, he joined the Bobby Felder and Calvin Jones Big Bands, broadening his repertoire and further defining his unique style. Over the years, he has performed with an array of celebrated artists, including Roberta Flack, Archie Bell, The Clovers, The Orioles, Percy Sledge, and The Jewels. Additionally, he toured Japan with R&B sensations The Delfonics, cementing his reputation as a skilled guitarist and performer.

In 2006, David co-founded Main Street Blues, a group dedicated to celebrating the blues and its profound influence on contemporary music. As a vocalist, guitarist, and engaging frontman, David continues to captivate audiences with his soulful performances and deep connection to the music.

Reflecting on his musical journey, David shared, “I started playing music as a teenager purely for the love and joy of it. Now, I want to share that love and joy with everyone. I want to see people dance, sing, smile, and have a good time.”
