With a captivating blend of storytelling and musical innovation, vocalist Anna-Lisa Kirby weaves enchanting tales through her dynamic voice and inventive phrasing. Her repertoire ranges from soul-stirring ballads to vibrant jazz standards and personalized renditions of contemporary hits, showcasing her versatility and expressive command.
Anna-Lisa’s passion for jazz led her to New York City, where she honed her craft at The Manhattan School of Music in 1990 and performed in iconic venues and jam sessions including Augies, Visiones, Zinc Bar, Smalls, and Dean Street Cafe. Drawing inspiration from legendary singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Carmen McRae, she developed a distinctive voice that combines technical mastery with emotional depth.
Her career highlights include collaborations with saxophonist Andy Farber and the Swing Mavens, performances at Swing 46 and Lincoln Center’s Mid-Summer Night Swing, and sharing the stage with jazz luminaries such as Steve Kirby, Spike Wilner, Alvester Garnett, Myron Walden, Stefon Harris, and Terreon Gully. From 2004 to 2018, she served as Jazz Vocal Instructor and Jazz Program Coordinator at the University of Manitoba, performing and recording with faculty members and participating in landmark concerts including The Songbooks of Leonard Cohen and Carole King and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
Currently, Anna-Lisa performs regularly with esteemed jazz artists including Warren Wolf, Obasi Akoto, Sean Jones, Tim Green, Cyrus Chestnut, and others. Her performances can be seen at celebrated venues such as Smalls and Mezzrow in NYC and Keystone Korner in Baltimore, MD.
