Allyn Johnson is a celebrated pianist, composer, arranger, and one of Washington, D.C.’s most respected musical voices. A native of the city, Johnson has built a distinguished career defined by versatility, spiritual depth, and technical mastery. His sound seamlessly merges gospel roots with the rich language of jazz piano, creating a style that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Since 2005, Johnson has served as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), where he leads the UDC Jazz Ensembles, coordinates the jazz program, and mentors a new generation of artists. Under his leadership, the program has flourished, cementing UDC as one of the region’s most vital centers for jazz education.

As a performer, Johnson leads the acclaimed Divine Order, a trio known for its dynamic interplay and spiritually charged approach to improvisation. He has also collaborated with an impressive roster of artists, including Carmen Lundy, Christian McBride, Warren Wolf, Keter Betts, Wallace Roney, Antonio Parker, Paul Carr, and many others. Whether performing as a sideman, soloist, or bandleader, Johnson’s playing is marked by clarity, emotional expression, and a deep reverence for the jazz tradition.

A prolific composer, Johnson’s works are frequently performed by university ensembles, church groups, and professional jazz musicians. His writing reflects a wide spectrum of influences—from gospel and classical to bebop and modern jazz—while maintaining a distinct compositional voice.
