About Winard Harper

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Winard Harper is celebrated as one of the most soulful and technically gifted drummers in modern jazz. Deeply influenced by legends like Max Roach and Billy Higgins, Harper developed a drumming style that is both propulsive and deeply musical—balancing explosive energy with melodic touch.

In the 1980s, Harper gained national recognition as part of Betty Carter’s band, where he learned not just the technical demands of performance but also the artistry of leadership and creativity on stage. He later co-founded the acclaimed group The Harper Brothers with his trumpeter brother Philip Harper, helping to reignite the hard-bop tradition and becoming a vital force in the jazz renaissance of that era.

Throughout his career, Winard has collaborated with some of the greatest names in jazz, including Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and Billy Carter. As a bandleader, he continues to inspire audiences through his ensemble Jeli Posse, a group that explores the intersection of African rhythms, Caribbean grooves, and straight-ahead swing—an expression of Harper’s global approach to jazz.

Beyond the stage, Harper is a passionate educator and mentor, often working with young musicians to preserve and expand the jazz tradition. His performances are not just displays of technique but profound celebrations of rhythm, communication, and spirit.

With Jerry Weldon’s fiery saxophone, Joy Brown’s expressive vocals, and Winard Harper’s commanding pulse behind the drums, this performance will be a highlight of the festival—swinging, soulful, and unforgettable.
