Carla Cook – A Voice That Defies Boundaries

Experience an unforgettable evening as acclaimed jazz vocalist Carla Cook joins pianist Cyrus Chestnut on February 15, 2026 at 7:00 PM for a soul-stirring performance that blends warmth, swing, and storytelling in true jazz tradition.

Born and raised in Detroit’s rich musical landscape, Carla Cook began singing in her church choir at a young age, later studying piano, voice, and string bass throughout her school years. Her foundation in gospel and classical music shaped the expressive versatility that now defines her sound. After earning a degree in Speech Communication from Northeastern University in Boston, she moved to New York in the early 1990s to pursue a full-time career in jazz.

Carla’s debut album, It’s All About Love (1999), earned a Grammy® nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Performance — a remarkable feat for a debut release. She followed with Dem Bones (2001) and Simply Natural (2002), albums that highlight her fearless ability to reinterpret songs from across genres, from Motown classics to jazz standards, while maintaining a deep connection to the heart of the music.

Throughout her career, Cook has captivated audiences across the globe, performing with leading jazz musicians and appearing at premier venues and festivals. Beyond the stage, she has shared her artistry through education, teaching at institutions including The Juilliard School, where she inspires the next generation of vocalists with her commitment to authenticity and musical storytelling.

Carla Cook’s artistry reflects everything that defines modern jazz vocal excellence — grounded in tradition yet fearlessly forward-looking, soulful yet sophisticated.
