NEA Jazz Master Jason Marsalis – Rhythm, Innovation, and the Spirit of New Orleans

Experience the dynamic artistry of Jason Marsalis, one of today’s most versatile and inventive drummers and vibraphonists. A member of the legendary Marsalis family of New Orleans, Jason has carved out his own distinct voice in the world of jazz — combining deep tradition with forward-thinking creativity.

Born into jazz royalty, Jason is the youngest son of pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, and brother to Branford, Wynton, and Delfeayo Marsalis. His musical journey began early, performing with his father’s group at age seven and later joining the Ellis Marsalis Trio and Los Hombres Calientes alongside trumpeter Irvin Mayfield. He also became an essential part of Marcus Roberts’ Trio, where his rhythmic sensitivity and inventive interplay helped define the group’s celebrated sound.

Jason’s versatility as both drummer and vibraphonist has made him a sought-after collaborator. He has appeared on numerous recordings, including Delfeayo Marsalis’ acclaimed album Pontius Pilate’s Decision, where his nuanced playing adds both drive and depth to the music. As a bandleader, Jason has released several albums under his own name — among them Music in Motion, In a World of Mallets, Music Update, and Melody Reimagined: Book 1 — each showcasing his brilliant sense of rhythm, melody, and form.

Whether behind the drum kit or at the vibraphone, Jason Marsalis continues to embody the evolution of jazz — bridging the past, present, and future through rhythm, melody, and unmistakable style.
