Singer, songwriter, and producer Sy Smith is an acclaimed voice in soul music, known for blending funk, neo-soul, R&B, and jazz.
Born in New York City and raised in Washington, D.C., Smith is a proud Howard University graduate. She began as a backing vocalist for Whitney Houston, Sheila E., Meshell Ndegeocello, Chaka Khan, Usher, and Macy Gray, then took control of her own path as an independent artist. Critics praise her lyrical dexterity, her rhythmic swing, and a range that moves from a gritty alto to a soaring soprano whistle register.
She has also earned a following among jazz audiences. As a featured guest with Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti, she trades playful, note-for-note phrases with his trumpet, and her performance of “The Look of Love” on his Live in Boston DVD is an audience favorite.
At the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Smith brings a powerful voice, strong stagecraft, and a style that moves easily between soul and jazz.
