The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra is the Pacific Northwest’s premier big band jazz orchestra, a 17-piece ensemble dedicated to preserving and advancing large-ensemble jazz.
Co-founded in 1995 by saxophonist Michael Brockman and drummer Clarence Acox, SRJO entered its 32nd season in 2026. It is also known for its commitment to free and affordable jazz education in the Greater Seattle area.
Its repertoire spans ragtime, classic swing, bebop, and contemporary works, drawing on Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and more. Brockman transcribes lost arrangements note for note from vintage recordings so they can be performed again.
In the band’s first full-scale leadership change in 31 years, the orchestra named pianist and composer Orrin Evans its new Artistic Director, beginning with the 2026-27 season.
At the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, SRJO offers a full-throttle big band experience that carries the jazz orchestra tradition forward.
